Former State Footballer Stephen Passes Away at 38

Former Karnataka footballer Stephen, aged 38, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, 11:30 AM at SK Hospital, Jalahalli. He was undergoing treatment for jaundice.

Known for his skill as a striker, Stephen was a talented player who represented Karnataka in the Santosh Trophy campaigns of 2011 and 2012. Also, he played in various prestigious tournaments during his career including B.C. Roy Trophy in 2007, held in Faridabad, and U-21 National Football Championship.

Stephen also represented BDFA XI in the All India Football Tournament held at Don Bosco, Chennai, where his team emerged as winners in 2012. During his club career, he played for teams such as Universal FC, BEL, KSP, and BEML (KGF), and trained under noted coach Raman Vijayan. He later played for South United FC and continued his football journey as a player-cum-coach with Sree Gajanana FC.

Stephen is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. His body is being kept at his residence behind Aiyappa Swamy Temple, Jalahalli, for final respects. The burial is scheduled for Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Vidyaranyapuram Christian Cemetery.

The Karnataka State Football Association (KSFA), Bangalore District Football Association (BDFA), and Referees Board have expressed their deep condolences on the sudden and untimely demise of Stephen.

Puttaiah Memorial Cup to kick off from Saturday, Aug 5

The top stars of Bangalore football will clash in season’s first senior tournament, Puttaiah Memorial Cup, which will commence from Saturday, August 5 at Bangalore football stadium. The famous silverware was donated by the Directors of Ranga Vilas Transport Ltd, Bangalore 

in the name of  C Puttaiah Memorial Rolling Cup. 

In this year’s edition, INFINITI has come forward to sponsor the tournament. Winners will take away a cash prize worth Rs.25,000 and Runners-up worth Rs.15,000. 

The inaugural day of the tournament will witness the following matches:

Former KSFA President AR Khaleel no more

Former president of the Karnataka State Football Association (KSFA), AR Khaleel passed away at his residence in the early hours of today, May 10. Khaleel Saab, 91, popularly known within the football circle was the President of KSFA for 28 years. He was also a part of the AIFF Executive Committee and held various posts in the AIFF including Treasurer and Vice President till 2018. 

Khaleel represented the then Mysore state as a player and took over the reins of the Jawahar Union club as an administrator. He then became a member of the Bangalore District Football Association in 1953, took over as a Treasurer of the KSFA from 1961-81 and was later elevated to vice-president (1981-89). He became the president of the KSFA in 1989. 

After serving seven terms, Khaleel resigned from the position of KSFA President due to his failing health in early 2017.

 

KSFA President and AIFF Vice President Mr N A Haris, visited Khaleel’s residence on TV Road and paid his respects to the departed soul at 2.30 AM this morning.

 

“Khaleel sab had rendered yeoman service to football both at the national as well as the state and district level. He was a passionate football lover, former player, owned one of the city’s famous football club Jawahar Union FC and an astute administrator,” Mr Haris said.

The burial service took place today at 6 PM.

 

Karthik Govind Swamy to lead Karnataka in 76th Santosh Trophy

Karthik, captain of the recently concluded BDFA Super Division League winner Sporting Club Bengaluru will lead a 22-member Karnataka State Football Team for the 76th Santosh Trophy, the National Football Championship for Group I to be held in New Delhi from Dec 23-31, 2022.

The squad will leave for Delhi tomorrow. Karnataka will play their first match on  Dec 23 against Gujarat.

The main feature of this edition is that the league is played with 20 teams, something that even I-League and ISL yet to put up. 

The last edition was played between 15 teams with no relegation. While 2 new teams were promoted from previous season, 3 new teams were given direct entry to Super Division.

Bengaluru FC announce squad for Puttaiah Memorial Cup

Newly appointed Blues’ Head of Youth Development Jan van Loon will lead the Bengaluru FC ‘B’ side set to take part in the Puttaiah Memorial Cup, scheduled to take place in two Zones, the club announced on Tuesday. 

Bengaluru FC B will face Kodagu FC in their opening encounter on Thursday, August 11th, with matches scheduled to take place at the Bangalore Football Stadium, in Ashok Nagar.

“The Puttaiah Memorial Cup has always been a special trophy for the club and we look forward to giving our best in order to bring the trophy home. The boys have been training well and I can’t wait to see them showcase what we’ve been working on in the tournament,” said Van Loon, ahead of his side’s opening match.

The squad features new signings Clarence Fernandes, Felixson Fernandes and Ankith P, who also featured in the Premier League NextGen Cup that was held in the UK, late last month. Karnataka’s own Sudheer Kotikala will also feature in Jan van Loon’s side in the Puttaiah Memorial Cup. The Blue Colts’ defender Robin Yadav will captain the Blue Colts for the tournament. 

“We’ve been tracking the progress of the boys in training, and things are looking very positive. They’re working hard as a team and everyone is fighting for a spot in the starting XI. This squad is a mix of young and experienced players, and we’re looking forward to seeing them working together,” said Kaizad Ambapardiwalla, Assistant Coach of Bengaluru FC B.

Following the opener against Kodagu FC, scheduled for 4 pm, the Blue Colts will face Roots FC on August 13th and Kickstart FC on August 15th.

NOTICE: FC Agniputhra trials

FC Agniputhra, a newly launched Karnataka State Football Association (KSFA) affiliated and BDFA Super Division football club will be organizing selection trials for the coming 22-23 season on May 26 and 27, 2022 at the HAL Sports Club grounds from 8 AM to 12 PM.

C Division Football League games postponed until further notice

Owing to the Government of Karnataka ruling that prohibits 'gathering, agitations, protests, or celebration of any type in any public place in Bengaluru for a week (March 15 to March 21)', all C Division matches scheduled for today KSFA and BDFA stand cancelled. 

A communication from the KSFA also mentions that since the State government has promulgated Section 144 in different parts of the state including Bengaluru city, no football matches will be conducted by the association until further notice.

 

FC Bengaluru United beat Kickstart 1-0 in hard fought-clash

In what could be described as season’s title-defining clash, giants FC Bengaluru United (FCBU) and Kickstart FC confronted under the sunny skies and before the cheering supporters at the Bengaluru Football Stadium. In the end, FCBU carved out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Kickstart FC. 

Both teams had their moments in this see-saw game before Luka Majcen scored in the 82nd minute to give defending champions FCBU a well-deserved win. 

Both were slow to get off the blocks – but they gradually began to up the ante, creating half chances and trying to wrest possession. Luka, Aenem K Jurwa and Batskhemlang Thangkhiew were bright in attack for FCBU, while James Singh and Kinshuk Debnath were strong at the back. Soon after the water break in the first half, both teams came close to scoring – two chances for Luka Majcen were saved by the Kickstart goalkeeper, while FCBU goalkeeper Srijith put in a spectacular save to keep Kickstart at bay.

Coming out in the second half, both teams went on the attack right away, the game moving from one counterattack to the other. In the 55th minute a corner from FCBU taken by Aenam was set up for Luka but he was unable to see it through. This was followed by Kickstart failing to make the most of their freekick – as the pendulum continued to constantly swing. 

FC Bengaluru United were relentless in their charge; in the 76th minute a brilliant corner taken by Bedashwar was beautifully set up for Denil, whose shot just hit the post. FCBU’s dogged persistence finally paid off; in the 82nd minute, Kynsailang Khongsit’s smartly placed cross to Luka was adroitly controlled by the Slovenian striker and finished off in a thumping goal.

A thrilling win for FCBU that keeps their unbeaten run intact and sets them up well for the remainder of the tournament.

Former state footballer Narasimhiah no more

Sri K Narasimhiah, 88, former State and Railways player passed away today morning at his residence in Srinagar, Bangalore. He also represented the then famous Blues Club  and later seen managing the Young Blues FC, which now plays in the BDFA C Division League.

Narasimhiah was a top player of the 60s. He represented BDFA XI. He was the main player for Railways and participated in various tournaments in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other parts of the country. In Railways, he played alongside another top player Pushparaj. Later he joined Blues and retired as a State Govt. Cooperative Society employee. 

Narasimhiah was passionate towards the game. Those days Blues Club representing the City area and Bangalore Muslims representing the Cantonment area were two teams that attracted large number of fans and played entertaining football.

Narasimhiah is survived by two sons and a daughter. His funeral will take place at Chamarajpet Burial ground today, 12 pm onwards.

Former state footballer Sigamani no more

Sigamani, 72, expired due to Covid-19 yesterday morning at a hospital near his house at OMBR Layout, Banaswadi, Bangalore. He was employed with Services and retired as a Subedar from MEG. 

Hailing from KGF, Sigamani represented Karnataka state in Santhosh Trophy at Calcutta in the year 1978 and the year after at Coimbatore, where Karnataka lost to Punjab in semis.  He was a regular left-out player for MEG, also, went on representing Indian Army against many international teams. 

Sigamani was coaching a team in Banaswadi that play in BDFA C division along with a school in Sishuvihar. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. 

Former city footballer Mahalingam no more

Mahalingam, 72, former Bangalore Mars, Jawahar Union, and 515 Army Base Workshop player, passed away today morning at his residence owing to a heart attack. Tragedy struck in the family within two days of passing away of Mahalingam’s elder brother, Murthy, who too died due to heart attack. 

Mahalingam comes from the family of footballers, he was a popular figure in the Gouthamapura area. Along with three brothers, Jairaj (HAL), Murthy (HAL), Shekhar (CIL), he rocked city’s football scene. 

Mahalingam was known to be a sturdy stopper back and spent most of his football career playing for 515 Army Base Workshop. Such was the competition back then that despite consistently playing well he could not break into the state football team. He was a regular in the Bangalore Football Stadium witnessing BDFA and KSFA Women’s league.

Mahalingam is survived with wife and three daughters. KSFA and BDFA condole the demise of the former footballer

Former state and HAL footballer Murthy no more

Murthy, 69, former Santhosh Trophy and HAL player expired today following a heart attack. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

A resident of Gowthamapura, Ulsoor, Bengaluru, Murthy started with Bangalore Mars in 1970 and then played for the then strong  515 Army Base Workshop before joining HAL and played for them till 1980.

Murthy is known for his match winning brilliant scissor kick goal against Maharashtra that took Karnataka to the final against Bengal in the 1975-76 Santosh Trophy at Calicut. In the final Karnataka held the powerful Bengal side 0-0 but lost 1-3 in the replay match to finish runners up, state’s best finish since then.

A skilled forward, Murthy was picked for the India Junior camp in 1976. 

The funeral is scheduled to be held at Laksmipuram burial ground in Ulsoor later today. The KSFA and BDFA condole the death of the former state player.

 

Football great Ramakrishna 'Rami' no more

E Ramakrishna, 91, popularly known as Rami expired today afternoon at his residence at Gavipuram, Guttahalli, Bangalore. He represented then Mysore state and Bangalore Blues before joining ITI and playing a major role in shaping the club’s future. 

Ramakrishna ventured outside the state and plied trade at Calcutta (1953), Madras (1954), Ernakulam (1955-), Trivandrum (1956). Also, he represented the Indian national team against a Russian team played at Bangalore in 1956.

While with ITI, Rami won all the major trophies including the George Hoover Cup (BDFA League). He was one of the pillars behind ITI winning the first edition of Federation Cup in 1977. He coached ITI for more than a decade. 

KSFA entrusted him with coaching assignment of the state youth teams. Also, he was instrumental in promoting women's football in the city. Later he joined Bangalore United Football Club, several footballers trained under him; he played an important role in shaping up their career.

* On April 16, Karnataka State Football Association (KSFA) took the decision of halting all football activities in the state. KSFA instructed all its District Football Associations to suspend official leagues and other events until further notice. This decision was taken in the wake of rising number of Covid cases in Karnataka and keeping in mind the welfare and safety of all our players and officials. The ongoing DFA leagues will be continued from a later date as and when the situation is conducive to play football in a safe environment.

Shivasakthi's first-half hat-trick help Bengaluru regain top spot

Bengaluru FC returned to winning ways with a 3-0 defeat of Bangalore Independents FC, at the Bengaluru Football Stadium, on Monday. Striker Shivasakthi’s first-half hat-trick proved the difference as Sandesh Bhoite’s side regained their spot at the summit in the BDFA Super Division standings.

The Blues Colts dominated proceedings from the start and took the lead with just six minutes on the clock when Thoi Singh found himself in space and unmarked in the middle of the pitch. The midfielder picked out Shivasakthi with a through ball and the Blue Colts’ no. 9 finished past the onrushing Nishanth N. to put BFC 1-0 up. Only two minutes later, he doubled the lead when he won the ball off Navneeth Krishna at the edge of the box and finished with a first-time effort that found the bottom corner.

Shivasakthi completed his hat-trick right on the half hour mark when he dropped deep to evade his markers and picked Thoi’s run on the left wing with a through ball. The winger cut into the box past Independents defender Surendra and pulled it back to Shivasakthi, who smashed it into the roof of the net from close range to make it 3-0.

Four minutes into the second half, the Blue Colts almost added a fourth to the scoreboard when Monirul Molla, on as a half time substitute, found his way into the box and picked out Shivasakthi but the striker’s shot was straight at the ‘keeper. The Blue Colts controlled proceedings for the rest of the half, rang in several changes and saw out the game with ease, to take all three points and go top of the standings.

Bengaluru FC are back in action on February 26 when they take on ASC.

Bengaluru FC cruise past Young Challengers

Bengaluru FC began their BDFA Super Division League campaign with a convincing 3-0 win against Young Challengers FC, at the Bengaluru Football Stadium, on Friday. Lalhmunmawia’s goal in the first half was added to by strikes from Shivasakthi and Ratanbi Singh as the Blue Colts capped off a dominant performance.

Bengaluru were on the front foot from the start, with Sandesh Bhoite’s side camping in the opposition half, dictating proceedings for the most part. The first shot at goal came in the eighth minute when, with possession just outside the box, Bekey Oram saw an opening. The youngster’s opportunistic strike sailed just over the bar.

Bekey’s presence in the midfield was key to Bengaluru having a majority of the possession, and he was central to the move that put the side ahead. The midfielder won the ball in midfield, found Akashdeep Singh’s run with a perfectly weighted ball and Lalhmunmawia made no mistake in finishing the winger’s cross on the half volley.

Past the half hour mark, Shivasakthi got the ball at the edge of the box, turned his marker and evaded a few challenges but his shot lacked power and it was an easy save for the ’keeper. The final chance of the first half came in the 41st minute when Bekey’s danced past a few challenges and, with the ’keeper coming off his line, attempted a lob but was denied by a goal line clearance.

Five minutes into the second half, Bengaluru had a penalty and a chance to double their lead. Shigil NS, on as a half time substitute, won the spot-kick after he was brought down by Challengers’ goalkeeper Dilip V. However, Lalhmunmawia’s effort from the spot was saved by Dilip, who then did well to block the rebound.

Despite the miss, Bengaluru stayed on top of their game, and their persistence was rewarded in the 62nd minute when Shigil played Shivasakthi through. The Bengaluru forward found himself one-on-one with the ’keeper and beat him at the near post to double his side’s lead.

Shivasakthi then turned provider for Bengaluru’s third goal, as he found Ratanbi Singh on the overlap. The latter, who came on as a substitute, cut past his marker and unleashed a shot that bounced off the underside of the bar and into the goal. Dipesh Chauhan, a spectator for most of the match, showed good reflexes in the dying moments of the game to preserve his clean sheet.

The Blue Colts are back in action on January 20 when they take on FC Deccan at the same venue.
