MEG turned out to be the Super Division champ with a game in hand, they stay unbeaten with 9 wins a draw with a stunning goal difference of 29 (31-2).

HAL to shortlist new players early next week

Must have been a hectic schedule for the HAL football management for more than a week! The coaching staff invited the probable players on HAL ground early last week.

A melee of sorts broke out at the ground with 45-odd outstation players joining the fray. The selection trial pulled in 10 goalkeepers, too much on the platter for a team that played with only 2 keepers for most of previous season.

The second phase of the selection trial saw a trimmed outfit of 20 players, primarily from inoperative JCT, Sporting Club de Goa, Churchill Brothers, Sikkim United FC, and Kolkata clubs. These players will continue to train for another week.

Per manager Muralidharan, the final cut, comprising of 16-17 players will be selected not before Monday (next week), and the contract will be rolled out in next 3-4 days of time. Also, Muralidharan hinted that few players from the current team will get the axe. However, he refrained from naming them, as this might furthermore impact the performance of the ongoing BDFA super division commitment.

HAL in all probability will go for 4 keepers this season. While Pramod continues to don the gloves for Aircraftmen, veteran Sunder Rajan is ‘certain’ to join HAL, replacing the void created by the untimely death of his nephew Arun Kumar. Former HAL keeper Amar Deb, Air India keeper Souvik Mondal, and another keeper from a Kolkata will vie for the rest of the keeper slot.

After spending 3 seasons in Goa, Manipuri duo Konsam Ajitkumar Singh (Churchill Brothers) and Thoudam Joychandra Singh (Sporting Club de Goa) seen working hard to get back to an I-League team.

For the most part, the team rooster should have healthy 36-40 players.  Definitely a positive sign in last year’s comparison - the team only had a maximum of 26 players at any given time and royally suffered in marathon I-league.

Shankar's comeback trail

Life must be miserable for a young talent. Notably when you are making a positive transition from junior to the senior level, meet the junior-level national and state captain Shankar S.

Signed on loan for HAL during last season’s second I-League window, this 17-year old brilliant player met with an unfortunate knee injury while playing against Pune FC.

January 19 - the day when HAL beat Pune FC at their home ground and Shankar played an important role in that win. However, the club deprived Shankar a proper medical attention. It was only in the junior national camp Shankar’s injury was diagnosed – a ligament tear warranting operation.

Shankar touted as the next big thing in this part of the footballing world was out of action. His right knee was under the operating knife in May this year and had to shell out 40-odd grand from his own pocket.

Coming from a modest background, Shankar hopes AIFF to foot his medical bill.

Playing in the positions of stopper back and midfield, Shankar has impressed one and all. Indian Arrows national U-23 coach Desmond Bulpin says, “Shankar is an exceptionally talented lad with a mix of right height, skill, and attitude. I fear we might have lost a brilliant footballer in injury!”

Bulpin did call his ward on when he was in Bangalore with his Indian Arrows team on last April, “Sir called me and advised few exercises”, says Shankar, who is on a recovery mode in his home at KGF.

As a part of Shankar’s rehabilitation program, he is into swimming and light weight training these days. He is confident of his return in the big stage.

Shankar expects to return in the early part of the coming season, “I will be joining the U-19 team and then reclaim birth in Indian Arrows’, prompts the confident youngster.
