Odisha hold Karnataka to a 3-3 draw in Santosh Trophy Group B opener

AIFF Media

The opening game of Group B in the final round of the 75th Santosh Trophy at the Kottappadi Football Stadium was an exhilarating encounter as Odisha and Karnataka played out a 3-3 draw. Odisha got their noses in front, but Karnataka struck back with three goals, putting themselves 3-1 up in the game. However, it was Odisha who had the last laugh as they levelled the scores.

It was Odisha who started brightly of the two, putting Karnataka on the back foot right from the start. Their high press awarded them the lead in the 15th minute. Chandra Muduli played in a perfect low cross to find Jamir Oram to convert easily. Karnataka stepped up their game after going down and almost found their equaliser when Sudheer Kotikela narrowly put wide a shot/cross from Prashanth. At the half-hour mark though, Karnataka were able to find their equaliser through Sudheer, who made amends for his earlier miss with a simple tap-in from an inch-perfect cross by Prashanth Kalinga.

Three minutes later, the Southern state turned the game on its head. Bavu Nishad gained possession high up in Odisha's half, unleashing a fierce shot which was deflected into the back of the net. Kamalesh proved to be a menace keeping Odisha's defense busy with his dribbles and crosses. He even stole a ball in the opposition half only to see his shot go wide. Odisha failed to get a grip on the game after their opening goal, losing the ball frequently in midfield. The first half ended with Karnataka in the ascendancy.

Odisha started the second half in the same fashion as they did the first. A long throw from Abhishek Rawat was flicked on by a blue shirt onto the crossbar. Karnataka's Arun Kumar then drilled a powerful free-kick which skipper Sekhar Behara saved. Odisha got a chance on the other end with Chandra Muduli again making a run but failing to link up with Raisen Tudu in a dangerous position. Just past the hour mark, Karnataka made it 3-1 with Sudheer getting his second after Behara failed to keep his powerful drive away.

Odisha got back into the game soon after from a mistake in the Karnataka defence. A corner from the right fell kindly to Bikash Kumar Sahoo's head who guided the ball back into the net with the defenders stranded. Karnataka kept attacking though, with Kamalesh hitting the woodwork.

Moments later, Odisha leveled the scores in stunning fashion. Muduli slammed his effort into the top right corner of the net from a counter. Eventually, Karnataka were made to rue the missed chances that felt to them. Odisha keeper Chinmaya Sekhar Bahara pulled out one last save from substitute Ankith's dipping long shot to prevent any more goals on the day.

Odisha will take on Manipur in their next outing in the 75th Santosh Trophy while Karnataka will hope to do the same against Gujurat, with both games scheduled on Tuesday, 19 April 2022.

Hero I-League comes back to Bengaluru again

I-League Media
Bengaluru FC Media

April 17, 2016, is Day for the history books! A day to reckon as the Steelmen from the Garden City prevailed over Salgaocar FC, courtesy the two strikes from Eugeneson Lyngdoh and Seiminlen Doungel to triumph their second Hero I-League silverware in three years.

11,000-odd fans thronged the stadium to see their team clinching the Hero I-League once again, that too at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

If a win is what the Steelmen needed to touch the silverware, Salgaocar FC had the motivation to finish the Hero I-League in a respectable fourth position.

Bengaluru started the game from where they left against Kingfisher East Bengal last week. Attacks, which constituted mostly from the right flank, kept the Salgaocar defense on their toes throughout. They only took nine minutes to crack the visitor’s defense.

The goal came from an awful mix up from the Salgaocar defense when Karanjit Singh came out of charge to clear the ball only to find a clever Eugenson Lyngdoh at the top of the 18-yard box, in his usual calm, the medio placed the ball at the back of the net. Salgaocar FC defense could have averted the danger but the damage work had been done already.

Salgaocar FC, missing several of their regular players, were up for a fierce challenge. Santosh Kashyap’s men never looked the same team who were unbeaten in the last five rounds. It was a one-way traffic thereafter but the visitors survived many times, thanks to some timely save from Karanjit.
The second half resumed a bit late from the scheduled time due to the power failure at one of the towers in the stadium.

Gaffer Ashley sharpening his attack line resorted to CK Vineeth for Udanta Singh. Eugeneson Lyngdoh, CK Vineeth flooded the Greens' box with a myriad of attacking moves but somehow Salgaocar FC defenders kept the scoreline unchanged.

Jackichand Singh, lately-introduced Semboi Haokip tried every bit to cancel the home team's lead of late, but an alert Bengaluru FC defense parried them away to secure the coveted silverware.

The host put the final nail in the coffin in the 88th minute from a wonderful with the ball run from Captain Sunil Chhetri, who relayed it to an unmarked Seiminlen Doungel, and he taps the ball home to send the crowd into a delirium.

The win gives the Blues an unassailable lead of 5 points over the Mariners, who are slated to host them next Saturday at the Kanchenjunga Stadium. Salgaocar FC succumb to the 6th position with 16 points with one match in hand.

Wim Koevermans: I’m concerned about the national players who are affected in MohunBagan ban

National Coach Wim Koevermans was right here at the Garden city for a noble cause - an occasion to present the auctioned Indian football shirt and the football to the winner.

This was an initiative by Toe To Heart, a Bangalore based NGO that financially and socially supports orphans and children from very poor or broken families.

Koevermans freely interacted with the journos who were present at the event. The discussion ranged from Toe To Heart’s charity venture to his eagerness on utilizing the FIFA match days 2013, from India’s preparedness in bidding U-17 World Cup to the obvious MohunBagan’s ouster from I-League.

A noble gesture from Kim, he’s keen to help an organization who is helping the kids in education, also, hopes to people should help a venture like Toe To Heart.

Playing on a FIFA match day is a prime objective for Koevermans in 2013. To start with, India is playing its first internal game against Palestine in Guwahati on February 6. This will be followed by a training camp for the AFC Challenge Cup where India is grouped with Guam, Chinese Taipei, and Myanmar.

Koevermans interacts a lot with the international Sunil Chettri, who is currently playing in Portugal - sometimes he plays, sometimes he is on the bench, however, he is training four times a week with quality good players. Coach monitors Sunil as much as the other players. Also, speaks to Indian Arrows coach Arthur Papas, thanks to his frequent visit to Kolkata to see I-League matches.

What about India’s U-17 World Cup bid, does that give a boost to the infrastructure? “If we are awarded the hosting rights, it will lift football in India in a very big way”, considers coach. There are a lot of stadiums, which needs to upgraded and renovated. Also, need to identify the host cities to bring in good training facilities. It will help develop football in India!

What’s Koevermans’ take on MohunBagan ban?
For once he sounded cautious, however, more than the ban he is more concerned about his national team players who play for Bagan, “Something happened on the pitch and rules were applied. If people put rules in the book and something happens, you have to apply them, that’s the way it is! 2.5 years of ban is a tough punishment!”

From the national team point of view he looked worried, “A lot of players can’t play at the moment, I’m not happy with that!”

Koevermans is hoping something positive from the next meeting (which is scheduled sometime later this month) so that players can play some competitive matches.
