Proud Papas’ U-22 boys: Too strong for Turkmenistan

India 4 (Lalrindika Ralte–36'[p], Alwyn George–6', Romeo Fernandes–76', Jeje Lalpekhlua–86'[p]) Vs Turkmenistan 1 (Italmazov Farhad–59')

The goal stayed inevitable but the wait continued. Sometimes one became impatient as opening the rival goalmouth at times, looked like improbable -- simply because Turkmenistan were not willing to push forward. By the 15th minute itself, they had 10 men defending.

The deadlock eventually broke in the 36th minute. Romeo Fernandes, India’s super-sub against United Arab Emirates made justice of Arthur Papas fielding him in the Starting XI. As he broke through inside the penalty box, rival defender Komekov Hemayat, beaten by Romeo’s sudden burst, found it best to bring him down.

Midfielder Lalrindika Ralte slotted it past Turkmenistan goalkeeper Garayev to put India in the lead.

India defeated Turkmenistan 4-1 in their fourth match of the AFC U-22 Qualifiers at the Sultan Qaboos Stadium in Muscat. India now move to 7 points from 4 matches and next play hosts Oman on July 3.

Besides Dika, Alwyn George scored in the 69th minute and Romeo Fernandes, in the 76th minute. Jeje Lalpekhlua converted from the spot in the 86th minute to complete the rout. For Turkmenistan, Italmazov Farhad equalised in the 59th minute.

Barely four minutes after Dika’s penalty conversion, Alwyn George, still then, a bit suffocated in between a horde of Turkmenistan players, got past two but his prompt left-footer hit the post.

India started on a cautious note. They stayed content in building from the back and switched flanks on a regular basis. There were passes being stitched, positions being interchanged. India had the regulator with them – they controlled the match.

Changing over, Turkmenistan started-off with more purpose. The first five minutes had the Indians defending. The organisation stayed good but despite it, captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu had to stretch back to palm over a deflection.
On the counter, a Romeo placement off a Vishak Kumar throw-in hit the upright in the 51st minute and then in the 55th minute, Manandeep Singh’s long-ranger sailed over.

But Turkmenistan struck in the 59th minute – Italmazov Farhad’s prompt right-footer beating a diving Gurpreet.

But the Indians regrouped fast – Alwyn George capitalising on a defensive lapse, chipped it over an onrushing Garayev. Alwyn could have settled the issue in the 71st minute when he ran in between the entire defence and entered the rival box only for Garayev’s legs to deprive him.

It didn’t matter as Romeo got his name on the scoring sheet for the second consecutive match in the 76th minute. This time, Alwyn provided the perfect supplier for him and Romeo made no mistake.

The second penalty came in the 85th minute when Jeje was pushed inside the box and Jeje gleefully converted from the spot.

For the rest of the match, the Indians maintained their shape. Turkmenistan did try to press hard but it came a bit too late.

INDIA: Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (Captain); Vishal Kumar, Deepak Devrani, Souvik Ghosh, Narayan Das; Ganeshan (Tirthankar Sarkar – 63rd), Milan Singh, Lalrindika Ralte, Romeo Fernandes (Abhishek Das – 82nd), Alwyn George, Manandeep Singh (Jeje Lalpekhlua – 69th)

Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications company with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, today announced the kick off of ‘Airtel Rising Stars’ (ARS) – India’s largest under-16 soccer talent hunt. Launched in association with Manchester United (one of the best soccer clubs in the world), ARS is a rigorous scouting program that will cover 16 cities across India and choose 12 talented footballers who will get the chance-of-a-lifetime to attend a week long training camp with Manchester United in Old Trafford, England.

Airtel Rising Stars is India’s largest under-16 soccer talent hunt which will give 12 promising youngsters the chance-of-a-lifetime to train with Manchester United Soccer School and kick-off a career in professional football.

This announcement was made in a press conference held in the presence of Manchester United football legend Dwight Yorke, Sanjay Kapoor (CEO – India & South Asia, Bharti Airtel) as well as ace footballer and ARS brand Ambassador Sunil Chhetri. This 3-months long talent hunt will be conducted in 16 cities (including Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, Kolkata, Bangalore, Calicut, Chandigarh and Jaipur) with the support of the respective State and District Football Associations.

Starting mid-July 2012, this 3-month long talent hunt will involve participation from over 10,000 young soccer players across 16 cities in India and hand-pick the best performers in skill tests, real time match simulations, and week-long coaching clinics with Manchester United Soccer School coaches.

"Followed by over 1.6 billion fans worldwide, soccer is a cult sport amongst youngsters across the globe. In fact, millions in the Indian subcontinent closely follow the game and aspire to play alongside professional soccer players. Given the mass appeal of football and a large youth population, we are uniquely positioned to tap and nurture young soccer talent. Aimed at recognizing and training such talent, we are today excited to launch ARS as a hunt for the best under-16 soccer players across India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. As a game, soccer represents the principles of team-play and ‘friendship’ - thus making it a perfect fit for brand Airtel. We see ARS as an exciting strategic step towards strengthening our brand positioning and appeal to the youth”, said Sanjay Kapoor of Airtel.

Manchester United’s Commercial Director, Richard Arnold said; “We are very pleased to associate with the ARS program in India and look forward to working closely with a number of extremely talented players. With 35 million Manchester United followers India is one of our fastest growing fan bases and I have no doubt that we will see equally talented individuals in this country too. The program is one of the largest of its kind in India and it is a great opportunity for us to work with these talented players in order to coach them on how to play the Manchester United way.”

The unique format of ARS program will ensure that every player gets an equal opportunity to showcase his skills and playing acumen through a series of selection criteria, overseen by renowned and officially certified coaches in each centre. The best three players from each of the 16 cities will then be picked to attend a final six-day camp-cum-selection trialconducted by coaches from Manchester United. The 48 players will be divided into four teams of 12 each and will be tested on all parameters (including physical attributes, individual skills, match situations and their performances in actual matches) before 12 of the best players are chosen to travel to Manchester United for a week and to train alongside the Manchester United Academy team.

The ARS program is an extension of this long term association between brand Airtel and Manchester United.

Deepak Prakash, a TFA graduate, and a proud Murphy Town boy has been selected in the national squad for the AFC U-22 Championship qualifying round to be played in Muscat from June 23.

Notice: HAL selection trials for 2012-13 season

Right after completing BDFA 2012 league engagement, H Chandrashekar, the newly appointed Technical Manager of HAL football team is setting his eyes for recruiting new players for the 2012-13 season.

After relegating from I-League, majority of the players have already moved out, looking for greener pastures. Such was the paucity in yesterday’s match against MEG that team could only field 5 out 7 players in the reserve bench, and that too 2 were goal keepers.

Earlier, Chandrashekar has expressed his displeasure over dependence of out stationed players and not producing enough Bangalore-based players in last couple of seasons, when HAL was in I-league. Looks like prioritizing local talents would be the flavor of the season!

The selection trials will be held at the HAL Sports Complex, from Saturday, June 23, 2012, from 8am onwards. The players will be selected on contract basis.

Interested players may contact the following co-ordinators:

  • Subash Kumar - 7259498703

HAL posts a convincing win against BEML

HAL 4 (Ajitkumar Singh-52', 77', RC Prakash-58'[p], 76') defeats BEML 2 (Khalander-22'[p], Stephen-43')

Other than HAL rallying strongly in the second half and scoring 4 goals, there were few highlights in a keenly contested HAL-BEML game:

  • National referee Vijaya Kumar, famous for his no-nonsense attitude, churned out as many as 7 yellow and one red card.
Surely something that didn’t go well with HAL coach Chandrasekhar!
  •  BEML coach and former international player Raman Vijayan taking field in the 63rd minute to a rousing welcome from a decent crowd.
BEML started splendidly scoring two goals via Dada Khalander (penalty) and Stephen in the first half. Ajitkumar pulled one quickly to reduce in the margin in the second half.

BEML coach went on an attacking mode by bringing himself by replacing a defender. The ploy which did bear any fruit other than conceding 3 goals in quick succession. BEML defense look too feeble and HAL fully utilized the opportunity.

Later Raman explained his rationale of fielding himself as his injury-plagued side is not having enough players fit players.

With only a match left HAL is leading the pack, BEML's prospect received a major dent after today's loss.

Super Sunday when HAL take on MEG!

Students Union defeats HAL

This was never going to be an easy game for HAL! Students Union, after a well fought and hard earned Super Division promotion, are out there to prove a point. The new promoted team exploited the despair of a disarrayed team and scored a 1-0 victory over HAL.

The goal came in the 68th minute after a well-planned move from Jai and Philip. Along with John, they moved inside the Hal’s penalty box and Samantha placing the ball into the net.

HAL never got their act together and failed to come back to the game. Thanks to some good team work by Students Union!

Seems like the newly appointed HAL coach, Chandrasekhar did not take the last year A Division runners-up seriously. He needs to study his opponents and come up with a strategy, else it will be tough of the I-League team to be in the title contention.

HAL transfers – season 2012

  1. Pramod P – Mohammedan Sporting
good temperament player, seen few best saves in I-league yet found on the losing side. Also has the worst goal conceding record (50+), definitely he would like to improve on that

  2. Joseph Femi Adeola – Mohammedan Sporting
called the ROCK, totally committed, very good human being much improved as a player since he came to India in 2007.
However, he was release in the season owing to Visa issue.
  3. Bijoy Das – United Sikkim Football Club *

  4. Gautam Debnath – Mohammedan Sporting
utility player, knows his limitation. Lacks creativity, can play in central defense, side back, defensive midfield. Not much effective on overlap

  5. Deepak Prakash – Pailan Arrows
Hardly used by HAL management, got a new lease of life in Pailan, can he live up to his potential?

  6. Malemngamba Meetei – Salgaonkar
  7. Ajitkumar Singh – Mohammedan Sporting
out and out midfielder also used as a striker (how ridiculous) in HAL

  8. Abdulla Hamza – Salgaonkar rejected by Salgaonkar, back to HAL

  9. Ahatesam Baux - Mohammedan Sporting
back in Md Sport, hardly used by HAL coach last season
  10. Koushik Bose - Mohammedan Sporting plagued by injury right at the beginning of the season, never seen him playing and was never used in I-league
  11. Muttath Sudheesh - Vasco
Back to his old team, again sparingly used in HAL
* Not confirmed
