South United script late win against Eagles

South United Media

It was a cagey game that produced few clear-cut chances but South United were able to take a couple of the ones they created to claim all three points. Just when it seemed like the game was going to trickle to a draw, Abhilash came up with the goods to see his side emerge victorious.

The game began with both sides struggling to go past each other’s midfield. Neither side seemed to be willing to let, largely with Bangalore Eagles working to stifle any attacking impetus from South United. The deadlock was, however, broken in the 13th minute when Rungsing put a good move to bed with a placed shot to beat the goalkeeper. That opened up the game a lot more and saw the Eagles push forward to try and break down South United.

It would only be in the 30th minute, though, that former South United forward Cletus Dominic would bring Bangalore Eagles level in the game from a close-range header worked from a long throw. SUFC ended the first half level despite having most of the early impetus.

The second half saw both sides struggling to create and working more to stifle each other. South United FC, in particular, couldn’t get their interplay in the final third right. It would take a piece of individual skill to give South United the lead once again. Sudipta Malakar strolled down the left flank to beat his marker and spot Abhilash in the middle with a cross. The substitute made no mistake from close range as South United put themselves closer to victory.

They defended well in the dying minutes to keep Eagles at bay and ensure that they ended the game with three points.

South United suffer 4-0 mauling to Kickstart

South United Media

Kickstart FC 4 (Sudheer Kotikela-17’ 22’ 49’ Uzochi Emmanuel Echebiri-47’) Vs South United FC 0

South United suffered their heaviest defeat of the season as Kickstart FC scored two goals in each half against them. The men in orange tried to mount attack after attack unsuccessfully as they tried to get back into the game.

South United FC began the game on the backfoot as they were pegged back by a persistent Kickstart attack. They defended cross after cross before Sudheer broke the deadlock in the 17th minute. A cross from deep found him in the box and he shimmied to beat his marker and put the ball in the back of the net. Just 5 minutes later, Sudheer turned up in the box again as a deflected shot looped over everyone else and he got to the ball before the goalkeeper could claim it.

South United started to see more of the ball towards the end of the half but they were unable to make the cut in the final third to really threaten Kickstart’s goal. Going in 2-0 at half-time, there was plenty of work for them to do, while Kickstart were looking good for their lead.

Early in the second half, Kickstart took the initiative and scored an early goal, this time Uzochi getting on the scoresheet. Only a couple of minutes later Sudheer completed his hattrick, leaving South united with a mountain to climb.

Alfredo Fernandes’ side pushed forward with zeal but their final pass was lacking in quality on a number of occasions. The likes of Jaison and Rungsing had a couple of half chances, Magesh had a few efforts from out of the box but no one could make a dent in Kickstart’s lead. A disappointing end to what could’ve been a different game if South United could find better quality in the final third.

South United FC script last-minute 1-0 win against Income Tax

South United Media

South United FC were rescued by Rungsing Muinao’s 89th minute winner against Income Tax just when it seemed like they were set for a scoreless draw. Despite creating plenty of chances all game, it took a scrappy goal in the dying seconds of the game to eke out a win for SUFC.

The game began with Income Tax registering a shot on goal, albeit a tame one. They spent most of the rest of the half trying not to concede though as South United created chance after chance. They were denied on most occasions by the imposing frame of the goalkeeper and his stellar reflexes on some occasions.

SUFC forward Jaison saw plenty of chances fall his way as he only needed to beat only the keeper on three separate occasions in the first half alone but was trumped by the Income Tax custodian Nicholas on all three occasions. Even the diminutive Sudipta had an opportunity as Aaron’s cross sailed over the goalkeeper and he met it with his head, but the effort just rolled across the goal line and was cleared.

The second half saw more of the same from South United FC, but as they chased they game, gaps started to appear at the back for Income Tax to try and exploit. They continued to test the keeper with Rungsing taking on more of an advanced role in the second period. At the other end though, every ball over the top threatened the SUFC backline.

Nikhil was called into action on more than one occasion as the game drew to a close but he kept his side in the game. The saves proved to be all-important as some direct play down the left led to Aaron taking three defenders out of the game with a pass and finding Kishan whose low cross was punched away by the goalkeeper but Rungsing was on hand to slot in the rebound.

Bengaluru beat Bangalore Eagles, secure first win in this season in BDFA League

Bengaluru FC Media

Bengaluru FC secured their first win of the campaign after overcoming Bangalore Eagles 1-0 in a Round 2 encounter of the BDFA Super Division League at the Bengaluru Football Stadium on Wednesday. Striker Edmund Lalrindika (49’) netted the only goal of the game, as Naushad Moosa’s boys moved up to 10th in the standings with 3 points.

The Blues Colts began the game on the offensive in a 4-3-3 formation, with Moosa making one change to the team as defender Muhammed Rafi replaced Robin Yadav. Sairuat Kima, Ajay Chhetri and Aditya Patra joined Edmund as the first team players in the squad.

Despite some early attacks by Bengaluru, it was the rivals who created the first close chance of the game in the 5th minute. Sairuat Kima’s weak pass was intercepted by Satish Kumar, and the attacker unleashed a first time effort that ’keeper Aditya Patra brilliantly tipped over on to the crossbar as the Colts breathed a sigh of relief.

Meanwhile at the other end, Bengaluru pushed ahead but with the Eagles playing a high pressing counter attacking game, Moosa’s boys were finding it tough to penetrate through their back line.

The second half began in the same was as the first, with BFC surviving a close chance. It was another defensive error from the Colts’ defense and once again it was Patra who came to the rescue to deny Satish Kumar again in the first minute of the second half.

Despite the shaky start to the second half, the Blue Colts gathered their composure and netted the opener in the 49th minute. Rafi, playing his first game this season, pumped in a long ball from the right flank to find Kima who flicked it on to the far post where an unmarked Edmund headed it home.

Both sides continued to attack each other for the rest of the half, but lack of a killer touch in the final third let them down as the game ended with a solitary goal.

Bengaluru FC now play Students Union in their third game on Saturday, November 23.

South United cruise to 5-1 victory over Dream United

South United Media

Despite conceding a goal, South United came back strongly, and emerged 5-1 victors against Dream United played yesterday evening. South United largely restricted their opponents to chances from set-pieces and shots from distance at one end as they continuously created opportunities down the other end.

South United started the game well on the front foot, dominating possession as they pushed Bangalore Dream United back. Though they had most of the ball, it was Dream United who bagged the opener from a break as Akshay’s low cross found Aditya in the middle who slotted past the keeper with little pressure on him.

The lead didn’t last too long as Umesh let fly from distance to equalise in the 23rd minute. Once SUFC drew level, they started to dominate proceedings and in the 36th minute Aaron was brought down in the box to win his side a penalty. Rungsing put SUFC in the lead from the spot and there was no looking back.

Going into half-time, South United were showing no signs of letting up. They picked up where they left off in the second half as Sudipta and Aaron drove most of the attacks. Umesh bagged his second at the 59-minute mark after Sudipta beat three men with a mazy run to lay it on a plate for him.

Jaison put some real daylight between the teams as he beat his marker with a smart turn and finished with aplomb past the diving goalkeeper. South United would have a few scares as Bangalore Dream United got a couple of shots on target but Bernard was alert in goal to save on more than a couple of occasions.

Substitute Vikram added South United’s fifth in the 90th minute to make it an absolute mauling of Bangalore Dream United. SUFC now have two wins in three games as they look forward to putting together a run.

Ozone beat South United in Super Division tie

South United Media

After an even first half, South United FC conceded two goals to Ozone FC Bengaluru’s Gagandeep Singh and Kapil Bhat to succumb to a defeat. South United would rue their missed chances as Ozone FC proved clinical with theirs to win on the day.

Most of the first half saw both sides create plenty of chances at either end but neither showed the composure in front of goal to finish them off. Kapil Bhat proved to be a thorn in the side of the South united defence all game as he received the ball in advanced areas and linked up with the likes of Alocious and Prabin around him. The first chance of the game fell to Bhat who collected the ball at the edge of the box and turned to create some space for himself. His whipped shot was only inches wide of the post.

Not too long after, Jaison would create South United’s first chance of the game as his mazy run took him into the box but his shot was parried at the near-post by Gunashekhar.

Ozone nearly had a goal through some confusion in the South united defence as well when Bernard rushed out from the goal to collect the ball, but Nidhin oblivious to his keeper’s position attempted to cushion the ball with his head for the keeper to collect. The resulting header nearly ended up in the goal.

South United also nearly broke through in the final minutes of the half as some good pressing from Aaron meant that the ball rebounded into Magesh’s path and he was able to find a good pass to Jaison’s feet. Just as the striker shaped up to shoot, Ozone’s Shahajas put in a goal-saving tackle.
Aaron kicked off the second half well for South United as he robbed the goalkeeper of the ball and turned towards the open goal but his shot was blocked by an onrushing defender.

In the 63rd minute, South United’s custodian Bernard failed to collect a rebound and Gagandeep was at hand to slot the rebound past him to put Ozone in the lead. The opening goal seemed to have injected Ozone with some energy as they pressed well to keep South United from creating meaningful attacks.

As South United pushed forward to equalize, Ozone broke forward in the 82nd minute and Kapil Bhat was on hand to put an easy chance in the back of the net to seal their 2-0 victory.

Bengaluru sign Raphael Augusto and Ashique Kuruniyan

Bengaluru FC Media

Indian Super League champions Bengaluru FC have signed Brazilian midfielder Raphael Augusto and India National team player, versatile winger Ashique Kuruniyan.

Raphael joins the club on a two-year deal that keeps him till the end of the 2020-21 season. Augusto, a native of Rio de Janeiro, becomes the sixth foreigner on Carles Cuadrat’s roster as Bengaluru begin their ISL title-defence on October 21 at home against NorthEast United.

The twenty-eight-year-old Raphael joins Bengaluru on the back of four seasons with Chennaiyin FC, with whom he has won the league twice. He also becomes the first Brazilian to wear the blue of Bengaluru.

The Malappuram-born winger Ashique has signed a four-year deal with the reigning ISL champions and will feature for the Blues till the end of the 2022-23 season.

Augusto expressed his delight on the move. "I am so happy to sign for a big team like Bengaluru FC. I was amazed in the manner in which the club fought tooth and nail to win the championship last season, and it's a good feeling to be a part of that team now. Bengaluru have a very good coach, a good set of players and some amazing fans and I’m sure together, all of us can win more titles for the club.”

Bengaluru boss, Cuadrat was all praise for Augusto. “I’d like to welcome Raphael, who is a two-time league winner, to the squad. We’re all aware of, and have seen the kind of talent he possesses. The onus is now on us to get the best out of an exceptional player like Raphael. We have a season that also includes Asian competition and a title-defence, and it’s going to take experience, talent and hard work to make it a successful one. I believe that Raphael brings all three attributes to the dressing room.”

Ashique, who completed formalities on a long-term deal, expressed his pleasure at completing a move he described as a dream. “I am really glad to have committed my future to a club like Bengaluru FC. Every young footballer in the country wants to play for BFC and I am happy to be able to realise this dream. I have a lot to learn from the senior players at the club, as well as the coaching staff and while I know that there is massive competition for places, I am confident and ready for the challenge,” said the youngster.

Bengaluru FC Coach Carles Cuadrat said the addition of Ashique gives his squad the kind of depth it needs considering the Blues will be competing in Asia too, this season. “Ashique is the kind of player who can help us in both, attack and defence. His talent, pace and guile gives us the right kind of selection problems, but more importantly, gives us options. We’re playing the AFC Cup this season and it’s important that we add Indian talent to the squad for the continental campaign. We’re looking forward to have him join the club,” said Cuadrat.

Ashique becomes the sixth new signing for the Blues this season after Manuel Onwu, Eugeneson Lyngdoh, Suresh Wangjam, Prabhsukhan Gill and Raphael Augusto.
