The inaugural Edition of KSFA Women’s Football League Super Division kicked off today at the Bangalore Football Stadium.

The first edition has 6 teams registered under KSFA Women’s Football Committee. A month-long football action will be played in two-legged league format.

Bengaluru FC colts crowned Super Division champions

Bengaluru FC were crowned Champions of the BDFA Super Division League in a glittering ceremony held at the Bangalore Football Stadium, on Sunday. The Blue Colts, who had sealed the title with a game to spare after their victory over ASC on December 27, were handed the prestigious George Hoover trophy for the first time in their six-year history.

Post an exhibition game against second placed Ozone FC, Naushad Moosa’s boys received their trophy from M.P. Swamy, Chairman of the Bangalore District Football Association.

The Blue Colts set a few records en route to their maiden title as they finished as the only team to win ten games. In fact, with 34 points in their kitty, they finished with a seven-point lead over second placed Ozone FC (27 pts from nine games). Bengaluru's tally of 46 goals scored was the highest this season and they also put an impressive defensive performance conceding just four goals in thirteen games, the least among all 14 teams in the Division.

Speaking on the historic occasion, Bengaluru FC’s Chief Technical Officer Mandar Tamhane said, “We came close on a couple of occasions in the past but’s a great achievement for the club to finally get over the line and claim this elusive trophy. The BDFA Super Division League has provided a great platform for our Colts to get valuable game time which was the idea behind forming the team last season. Their triumph in the Puttaiah Memorial Cup earlier in the season and the Super Division title now just shows how much progress the boys have made under Naushad Moosa and also attests our player pathway. The league has been improving every year and the experience that our boys had this season will definitely help them in the 2nd Division League campaign that begins this week.”

Coach Naushad Moosa was delighted with the triumph but also highlighted the hard work put in by the boys throughout the season. “It was a tough competition overall for us and the early loss against MEG was a wake-up call. It was important to get out of the relaxed mode and the boys immediately bounced back with a big win over Students Union and there was no looking back since then. We managed to rotate the squad throughout the competition and everyone who got a chance put in a great performance. This year the competition has provided us with the perfect preparation for the 2nd Division League which will be the real test for the boys.”

Bengaluru FC B travel to Goa on Tuesday, where they take on FC Goa Reserves in their opening match of the 2nd Division League, at the Nagoa Ground.

South United battle out a draw against MEG

South United started well by taking a lead in the 21st minute but squandered control of to MEG’s well drilled performance. 

Their bright start in the game meant that South United FC had MEG on the backfoot early on with most of the play flowing through their forward Riswanali.  It was fitting that the opening goal of the game came from him.

SUFC continued to attack for the most part of the first half but found it difficult to put away the chances they were creating. The only real chances that fell MEG’s way came towards the end of the first half as they started to capitalise on some poor giveaways from SUFC. They made the best of those chances in added time at the end of the first half as Hemanth put away his shot to equalise for MEG.

The second half saw some tables turning in the favour of MEG’s attack. Though, not threatening on every attack, their direct play saw South United struggling for a response. Whereas they had been clinical in the last few minutes of the first half, MEG were struggling to get on the end of their chances and finish them off.

South United’s fight back came midway through the first half and they were unlucky not to take the lead when they were on top, but MEG were quick to suppress any attack that was thrown at them. The game was on a knife’s edge for the last few minutes but the cagey nature of the game meant that neither team risked it all to get the three points.

An interesting tie that could have gone either way finished all even at 1-1 in the end with goals in either half. South United scored early post lemon-break but were unable to make the best of their impetus to close the door and let Independents back into the game. 

South United had defender Shinu and attacker Aaron D’Costa were back in their line-up after their return from suspension and injury respectively. 

South United FC began the game well on the front foot against a determined Bangalore Independents side. The action for the first 45 minutes remained firmly in the opposition half for SUFC which saw them constantly trying to break down the opposition. 

They created chances constantly but were unable to convert any of them. They continued to press the Bangalore Independents defence in the first half but found no breakthroughs. They were thwarted on a few occasions by good goalkeeping or defending, but they squandered a few where a little more composure would have meant a greater lead. 

The second half saw more of the same as SUFC pressed forward but were not as incisive in front of goal. The breakthrough for them came in the 66th minute when club captain Magesh found the back of the net with a well-placed shot. 

Soon after they scored, it began to look like they may rue their missed chances as Independents got a bit of a hold in the game and started to create chances of their own. 

Bangalore Independents struck in the 82th minute to equalise. It was a blow to SUFC and though they pressed for the win, the time was against them. They found a few more chances before the end but once again were let down by poor finishing.

FC Bengaluru United and Bengaluru FC play a draw game

Naushad Moosa’s Bengaluru FC side were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Bengaluru United in what was a physical battle for most parts in a Round-10 encounter of the BDFA Super Division League, at the Bangalore Football Stadium, in Bengaluru on Monday.

The point took the Blue Colts’ tally to 25 points with three games left to play as they stay at the summit of the Super Division.

After some end-to-end action in the opening quarter of the game, the Blue Colts finally made their possession count, breaking the deadlock from the spot in the 26th minute. Winger Leon Augustine, who caused trouble for the opposition defence with his frequent forays, was caught by Aashiq’s high foot in the United box, resulting in referee pointing to the spot. Myron stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to give Bengaluru a 1-0 led.

Moosa’s boys came close to doubling their advantage when Altamash Sayed, who had netted a brace in the previous game, unleashed a powerful shot from over 35-yards out. Swerving in the air, the midfielder was unlucky to watch his attempt cannon back into play off the crossbar, albeit bouncing inches ahead of the goal-line in the 33rd minute.

However, against the run of play it was United who levelled the scores after striker Hamza headed home from close range. The striker was at the right place at the right time and reacted quickly after an initial attempt on a corner had come off the horizontal.

The second half saw the Blue Colts attack with intent and camped in the rival half for long spells. BFC had their first chance of the second half just minutes into the second period when Myron’s long ball found Namgyal Bhutia just outside the box. The right-back controlled neatly and attempted a lob over an advanced ’keeper but his effort sailed over.

Moosa’s boys kept pushing up and had two more chances only to be denied by the rival custodian. Sairuat Kima’s header on Bhutia’s cross in from the right was parried away before another strike from Altamash was tipped over the bar. The Blue Colts were left frustrated by the rival defense who stayed back to hold them to a 1-1 draw.

Bengaluru cruise past Eagles 5-1, go 8-points clear at the top

Bengaluru FC recorded a fifth consecutive win in dominant fashion as they brushed aside Bangalore Eagles 5-1 in a Round-7 encounter of the BDFA Super Division League at the Bangalore Football Stadium, in Bengaluru, on Friday.

A brace each from Leon Augustine (35’, 64’) and substitute Lalnuntluanga (87’, 90’) after skipper Myron Mendes’ (20’) opener handed the Blue Colts their sixth win of the campaign. The result meant Naushad Moosa’s boys took their tally to 18 points after seven games, extending their lead at the top of the table to eight points.

The game began on a sour note when Edmund Lalrindika was withdrawn after a tackle down the flank saw the Blue Colts’ striker unable to continue. Bengaluru broke the deadlock in the 20th minute as Altamash Sayed’s free-kick from the right was headed home by Myron at the second post.

The Blue Colts then doubled their advantage in the 35th when Leon struck from close range after left-back Parag Shrivas did well to keep the ball in before sending a low powerful cross into the box to Leon who timed his run well for a finish that creeped in at the far post.

Bangalore Eagles pulled one back early on in the second half when a flailing hand from Parag in the BFC box caught a cross and prompted the referee to point to the spot. Striker Gopi levelled the scores with his penalty in the 50th minute.

However, it was the Blues Colts who restored their two-goal cushion when Leon completed his brace in the 64th minute. Myron, with a delicate chip, found Leon making a run into the box on the right, and the winger found the back of the net at the far post on the volley.

Striker Lalnuntluanga, on for Edmund in the first half, struck a brace late on to complete the rout. Biswa Darjee was the provider on the first instance, setting Lalnuntluanga up with a perfectly threaded pass in the 87th minute. On the stroke of regulation time, the striker scored his second, poking Leon’s aerial ball past an advancing Abhishek in the Bangalore Eagles goal, before slotting home from close.

Bengaluru FC will next face Bangalore Independents on Tuesday, December 11.

Ten-man Bengaluru down South United 1-0

Attacker Naorem Roshan Singh’s 4th minute goal was enough for Bengaluru FC to seal a fourth successive win in the BDFA Super Division League as they overcame South United FC 1-0 at the Bangalore Football Stadium, in Bengaluru, on Sunday. The win was the Blue Colts’ fifth of the campaign in six games, and took their tally to 15 points, consolidating their top spot in the standings.

The Blue Colts played with a man less for the entire second half after goalkeeper Aditya Patra was sent off for bringing down South United attacker Rizwanali outside the box in the first minute of injury time in the first half.

It was the Blue Colts who began the game aggressively and it took only four minutes for them to break the deadlock. Defender Parag Shrivas sent Roshan through in the box with a quick throw-in from the left flank on a counter attack. Roshan controlled the ball well and held off a couple of challenges before slotting it past the Jayanth Kumar in the rival goal on the bounce.

With a one goal advantage, Moosa’s boys took charge of the proceedings dominating possession in the rival half. With South United forced back, the Blue Colts had attempts on goal through Altamash Sayed and Roshan but the duo couldn’t get the better off the rival custodian.

With the first half coming to an end, Bengaluru suffered a setback when Patra was shown a straight red. The ’keeper was penalized for bringing down Rizwanali couple yards outside the box in a one-on-one situation.

Despite having a man less for the entire second half, the Blue Colts managed to dominate the proceedings and had a couple of close chances through Edmund Lalrindika and Altamash who failed to convert. Nonetheless, Bengaluru managed to defend well and seal a well-deserved win.

The Blue Colts now play Bangalore Eagles on Tuesday, December 11.

South United held to a 2-2 draw against Dream United

Dream United started the game pressing high up the pitch but as the game wore on, their press dropped lower, leaving only two men up top to make life uncomfortable for the SUFC defence.

As South United started to gain more possession, Dream United found themselves playing more defensive. On one of the occasions where Bangalore Dream United FC tried to break, their attack was stopped early on and the ball landed at SUFC captain Magesh’s feet. The midfielder found Aaron’s run with a looping ball over the top and the striker lobbed the ball past the stranded keeper into the empty net.

The tide turned quickly to favour Bangalore Dream United FC though as one of their attacks down the right-hand side found Rahul in the box, whose cross found his teammate inside the box and he made no mistake from close range to equalize.

They would score again in extra time of the first half as a ball over the top of the defence came towards SUFC’s custodian Jayanth who rushed out of the box to intercept, but his erroneous pass found the opposition attacker, Niyaz, who rolled the ball into the goal from a distance.

SUFC finished the half on top but had little to show for it as they went in trailing by 2 goals to 1, but they began the second half as they finished the first one – constantly on the front foot.

They looked for an avenue past the Bangalore Dream United FC wall in front of the penalty area but found few gaps. A few half chances later, Aaron burst into the box on the left and turned abruptly at the touchline to head towards goal when he was brought down. Jewel stood over the resulting penalty but could only hit the post despite beating the keeper.

Only a few minutes later, in the 68th minute, Nidhin put in a hopeful lobbed ball into the box which Aaron runs onto and loops past the keeper to find parity for SUFC.

The game opened up once the teams were tied at 2-2 and both teams threatened to score in the last 20 minutes, but neither defence would let up as the game ended in a stalemate.

Bengaluru FC down Ozone 2-1 in a thriller

Naushad Moosa’s young Bengaluru FC side came from a goal down to defeat Ozone FC 2-1 in a thrilling BDFA Super Division League encounter at the Bangalore Football Stadium, in Bengaluru, on Tuesday. Edmund Lalrindika’s 32nd minute equaliser cancelled out MS Jithin’s (2’) early opener for Ozone FC, before an own goal from defender Mark Anthony (76’) handed the Blue Colts all three points.

Going into this crucial game, Moosa opted to field an unchanged eleven from the win over Kickstart FC. However, the young Blues had a start to forget as they conceded inside the first two minutes.

Having lost the ball in the rival half, Bengaluru were hit hard by a quickfire counter attack by the rivals. Ozone attacker Jithin kept his composure to run solo and avoid Asheer Akthar’s tackle before beating Aditya Patra in the BFC goal with a left-footed finish from inside the box.

Having conceded just their second goal of the campaign, Bengaluru didn’t drop their heads and slowly found their groove. Their persistence finally paid dividends when striker Lalrindika pulled them level in the 32nd minute. The striker latched on to a lob from midfielder Biswa Darjee and fired home a half volley from the edge of the box to make it 1-1.

Winger Leon Augustine then looked to have beaten the offside trap and scored the goal that would’ve shot his side into the lead, only for a dubious decision from the linesman on the far side to rule his strike out for offside.

Bengaluru had back-to-back chances of their own inside two minutes of the second half as Leon Augustine, who combined well with substitute Lalnuntluanga, managed to beat his marker but his shot from close range was saved by the rival custodian. The resultant corner had skipper Myron Mendes’ header come off the crossbar after he met Altamash Sayed’s set-piece perfectly.

Bengaluru continued to push ahead and dominate the game which had turned physical and despite Ozone defending deep in their own half, the Blue Colts managed to break their defense down in the 76th minute, when left-back Parag dribbled his way through the Ozone backline with his resultant cut back turned into his own net by defender Mark Anthony.

With Ozone throwing bodies up front in the final quarter, Moosa’s boys managed hold on to their slender advantage to seal a fourth win in five games. The Blue Colts will now take on South United FC on Sunday, December 2.

Jewel Raja signs for South United

South United Football Club yesterday announced the signing of midfielder Jewel Raja from Mohammedan Sporting Club. The 28-year-old arrives at the club with tremendous promise and experience from his years of experience at I-League and ISL clubs. 

Jewel was picked to represent India at the U-19 level at a tender age of 16. He spent most of his time with the national team during that phase. Since then he had spells at Dempo, Pailan Arrows, Mohun Bagan, FC Goa, and ATK where he was a part of the side that won ATK’s second ISL title in 2016. His journey then continued with FC Pune City, Minerva Punjab, and Mohammedan Sporting Club before he joined South United. 

His international career progressed through the different age brackets before making his debut for the senior Indian side in 2011 and scoring on his debut in a 3-0 win against Chinese Taipei. He made 27 appearances in all for the senior Indian side. 

On joining South United FC, he expressed an ambition to see the club to new heights, saying, “In every conversation I have had with the management at the club, the ambition to succeed while playing attractive football has been very clear. It’s something that I can relate to, and I see it as a unique challenge to go through this experience with South United FC.” 

His new coach Miquel Llado also was pleased to have Jewel on board, he said, “We’re very happy to have Jewel in the team. He brings a set of skills and experience that we need and his composure on the pitch should also be a great balance for some of the younger players in the team.”  

Welcoming the seasoned midfielder, SUFC Director, Mr Sharan Parikh said, “We want to play football with the right technique and aesthetics. A number of pieces need to come together to form the entire jigsaw and Jewel's signing is anything but ornamental. This is a step in the right direction to create a team in sync with our ambitions.”

Parikrma Champions League 2018

The 2018 edition of Parikrma Champions League will witness the best school football teams from the city as well as a school from Dubai, Belgaum, Nagpur and Goa – all battling for the Equality Cup – a Cup that symbolizes the breaking down of social barriers. 

The league will take place in Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence from November 22 thru 24. Partnered by CGI, this will be the eighth edition of the Parikrma Champions League. The event is also supported by Identiti, providing clothing for the officials. Manipal Hospital will provide medical support for the tournament, ensuring that doctors and nurses are present at the stadium on all five days in case of any injuries or medical emergency.

The matches will have 20-minute halves and the Semi-Finals and Finals will have 30-minute halves.

“We are really happy and proud of our eighth PCL. Each year, we have grown, evolved, unceasingly working towards making PCL one of the best state-of-the-art football tournaments in the city. South United edge past a resilient ASC

The game witnessed all three goals scored in the second half where either team could have nicked a winner. Finally it was left up to striker Riswanali’s left footed strike to register South United FC’s third win out of four games. 

The first half was relatively well controlled by SUFC, as they kept a good defensive shape and created chances at the other end as well. The threat from ASC came from their talismanic captain and striker Jotin Singh. With four goals already in the league, he threatened the goal on more than one occasion from open play as well as set pieces. 

Players for South United FC including Riswanali, Magesh and Aaron were guilty of squandering chances against a resilient ASC team. As they kept plodding away at the ASC defense, they found gaps on at least 2 occasions where the striker was through on goal with only the keeper to beat and they couldn’t make the most of those chances. 

Given ASC’s performance in previous games where they came back to win at least a point or all three, these weren’t good omens for South United FC. 

The second half began with SUFC showing more impetus in attack and it paid off early as Aaron was played through on the right wing on his own with only the keeper to beat but a great distance to cover, he chose to ignore his team-mates running through the middle and deliver a stunning lobbed goal over a stranded ASC keeper. 

That early second half goal should have settled nerves for South United FC, but ASC were sparked to life with that goal and the game flowed from end to end. In one of the many ASC attacks, a ball over the top found Jotin Singh in space drifting out to the left flank. His stuttering low cross met Samananda who put the ball past Jayanth form close range to tie the score. 

Both teams continued to create, but South United had the better chances of the two, Aaron and Riswanali both missing from close range late on. 

They almost left it too late, but the breakthrough came in the 86th minute as Magesh’s chipped pass found Aaron with his back towards the goal at the edge of the box. He deftly laid it off to Riswanali who knocked it past the last defender and smashed home the goal with his left foot. 

Either side could have nicked the game in the last 20 minutes but in the end the chances that South United FC created and the slightly more efficient shooting won out.

South United lose to FC Bengaluru United

The first setback of the season came early for South United FC as they went down 3-0 to FC Bengaluru United. The game saw chances created at both ends but FC Bengaluru United were more clinical with their shots on goal than their opponents. 

South United conceded two goals in the first half and one in the dying minutes of the second to make the scored 3-0. They started the game on the back foot, with a few errant passes finding the red and white clad Bengaluru United players in dangerous areas. They struggled to defend the wider areas and eventually paid the price for it as a low cross found an unmarked Hamza in the box and he cut back in to slot home from a meter away to put his side ahead. 

A few half chances the other way fell to Aaron and Riswanali but they could not restore parity for South United FC. It became a theme that would run through the game for coach Miquel Llado’s boys.
Bengaluru United would make SUFC pay for the missed chances with another goal before they wound up the first half. It gave the trailing side a lot to tinker with at half time. 

It was a first half peppered with poor challenges and confrontations as well, spilling over into the second half. The two-goal deficit left South United FC with a mountain to climb. In cognizance of their situation, the team flew forward and threw caution to the wind, but they lacked a sharpness that their opponents were showing in attacking scenarios. 

The introductions of Lokesh, Anup, and Sooraj over the course of the second half to bolster the attack proved fruitless in the end as the team continued to squander good chances and found others blocked or parried by a good defensive unit. 

The hosts were on target once again in the dying minutes as Kayl made the score line 3-0 in their favor.

South United adds four new players to the squad

South United have completed the signings of Riswanali (Striker), Kishori (Striker), Sharukh Rahman (Central Midfielder), and Shinu Siluvapillai (Centre Back). It’s a mix of players with potential and quality to match the ambition of South United FC. 

Speaking on the signings, Director of South United Football Club, Sharan Parikh, said, “We are delighted to bring Riswan, Shinu, Kishori, and Sharukh on board. They bring a fresh outlook to our squad that we hope will serve us well in the upcoming season. Our goal will be to help them grow and develop at South United.” 

The new players and the new head coach Miquel Llado have begun the season well. The Spanish coach spoke about his vision for the team and how he saw these players in the mix, saying, “The style of football we want to play at South United Football Club is challenging and technical. We want to have the ball and command the play.” 

“From what we’ve seen in training these boys will help us refine that style. They’re full of potential and I hope we can bring the best out of them.” 

Among the new signing is 22-year-old Riswanali who comes to South United with loads of promise, having played with the likes of Gokulam FC and Chennai City FC. Following these spells was his 2017-18 season with the Kerala Blasters Reserve Team in the I-League 2nd Division. His stint at City Athletic FC didn’t last too long before South United FC came calling. 

Joining him, to bolster the attack is 19-year-old Kishori. A graduate of the BFC Academy, he has since sharpened his skills with the BFC U18 team. 

The club has also reeled in Sharukh Rahman from Peerless Sports Club, where he lit up the pitch for 4 years. The 25-year-old featured in the massive win for Peerless SC against East Bengal in the Calcutta Football League. 

Rounding up the newest arrivals is 22-year-old Shinu Siluvapillai fresh from his experience in the I-League with Gokulam Kerala FC.
