Karnataka crash out of Santosh Trophy

Losing the last game against Maharashtra, Karnataka finished bottom of Group B of final round of 77th Santosh Trophy in Itanagar, on Saturday, March 2, 2024. 

The star for the match was Mohammed Arfat Ansari for Maharashtra a who scored a hattrick. However, today’s win was not enough to Maharashtra to qualify for the quarter-final round. 

Manipur, Mizoram, Delhi, and Railways made to the knockout round from Group B.

It has been the worst performance for last five seasons for Karnataka. After dishing out an impressive performance by reaching semi-final in 2017–18, 2018–19, 2021–22, and winning the trophy last season, the state team failed to win a single game in the group stage this time. They needed to win the last two games to stay in contention for the knock-out round but lost 1-0 against Railways on Thursday, February 29 before losing 3-1 to Maharashtra on Saturday.

Karnataka rally back to hold Mizoram 2-2 in Santosh Trophy

Defending champions Karnataka came from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Mizoram in Group B of the 77th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy Final Round at the Golden Jubilee Stadium in Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh today morning. 

What looked Mizoram running away with full three points after goals from MS Dawngliana and MC Malsawmzuala but Karnataka showed the champion spirit to score twice in quick succession in the second half through Prabin Tigga and Vishal R to rescue a point. 

Today’s draw was Karnataka's second consecutive draw after a 1-1 result against Delhi on Thursday. 

Mizoram took the lead after a sensational move between Malsawmzuala and Dawngliana. With a superb behind-the-back flick, the former picked out the latter, who lashed a parabolic shot into the goal with a cleanly-hit half-volley. 

Mizoram were off the blocks quicker again in the second half and doubled their lead after another brilliant build-up. Winger Lalthankima got the better of Tigga with some exquisite footwork before cutting it in from the by-line. Arriving at the end of the cross was Malsawmzuala, who drove it into the bottom corner with a first-time shot.

But Karnataka were not done and dusted. Ravi Babu's side struck twice in two minutes to turn the game on its head. In the 67th minute, Nikhil Raj's cross from a free-kick slipped through the gloves of F Lalmuanawma and Tigga was on hand at the back post to bundle it in. Then, Sathish Kumar set up Vishal R with a great through ball into the final third. The latter took his time and slotted it in, wrongfooting Lalmuanawma.

Karnataka will be playing their third group game against Manipur on Monday, Feb 26.

Karnataka, Delhi settle for a draw in Santosh Trophy opener

Karnataka began their quest to defend the Santosh Trophy title with an 1-1 draw against Delhi played today morning at Golden Jubilee Stadium, Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh. 

Karnataka is placed in Group B along with Delhi, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, and Railways. 

Ravi Babu’s boys took the lead in 23rd minute from a wonderful wall pass from Vishal on which a 22-yard piledriver from Appu Arogyaswamy put the ball back on the net. The joy was short lived as Delhi equalized from a freak own goal by central defender Prabin Tigga three minutes later. 

Karnataka pressed hard, enjoyed most of the possession after changing ends but failed to score the winner. Their luck ran out when a Delhi striker was brought down by the other central defender Nikhil in the final moment of the game. Referee didn’t hesitate much in awarding a penalty to Delhi. Custodian Chirsturajan upped the ante and stopped Sridarth’s spot kick. 

Karnataka will be playing their second group game against Mizoram on Saturday, Feb 24, 10 AM, followed by Manipur (Feb 26), Railways (Feb 26), and Maharashtra (Mar 2). 

Karnataka make it through to Santosh Trophy semifinal

With three teams - Punjab, Karnataka, and Kerala vying for the semi-final spot from Group A in the 76th Santosh Trophy, Punjab took on Kerala while Karnataka were playing against host Odisha in  their last group game.

Karnataka took the lead from side-back Sunil's opportunistic in the 17th min of the game. Odisha quickly equalized via captain Prabin Tigga's goal, then took lead from Chandra Muduli in 35th minute. 

Half-time score read 2-1 for Odisha. 

Karnataka were quick to make it 2-2 from a Shajan Franklin's beautiful header. Post that the state boys dominated the proceedings but the winning goal eluded them.

Punjab takes the top spot with 11 points (3 win and 2 draw) and with 9 points (2 win and 3 draw), Karnataka came as the second best team from their Group thus qualifying for the semi final, which will be played at the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 

Karnataka score a perfect 10 against struggling Tripura

As many as nine players were involved in a goal fest as Karnataka boys rout Tripura 10-0 in their fourth group game of 76th Santosh Trophy played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi today. 

Tripura has failed to mark an impression thus far and managed only a point from their earlier three encounters.  

Shelton Paul opened the account for Karnataka as early as second minute of the game. It was literally a goal thrashing and Tripura defence was in shambles. Shelton completed his brace while the first half ended in 5-0 margin. The onslaught continued after changing ends and Karnataka scored another set of 5 goals.

With an all-win record Karnataka lead the points table. They will play their final league game against host Delhi on Saturday, December 31. 

Karnataka beat Ladakh 3-2 to register their third win

Karnataka boys rallied back from a goal down to defeat Ladakh 3-2 in their third game of 76th Santosh Trophy played at Jawahar Nehru Stadium today morning. Ladakh, considered to be one of the weakest team in Group 1 is participating Santosh Trophy for the first time. Before taking on Karnataka today, they have gathered one point from two games. 

What was considered to be an easy match didn't begin that way. The state boys were up for a rude shock when Ladakh opened the account early in the game. Mohmad Ilyas was the scorer for Ladakh. Karnataka gradually came back to the game and Abhishekh Powar equalized in the 27h minute. After changing ends, another striker Jacob John Kotookaren gave the much-needed lead. Defender Robin Yadav's 80th minute goal sealed the third win Karnataka. 

Stanzin Gilik reduced the margin for Ladakh in the added time of second half. 

Karnataka will play their next game against Tripura on Thursday, December 29. 

Karnataka beat Uttarakhand in Santosh Trophy

State boys defeated Uttarakhand 3-1 without much diffuculty in their second game of 76th Santosh Trophy, National Football Championship for senior men played at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi yesterday. Karnataka is placed in Group 1, the other teams include host Delhi, Gujarat, Ladakh, and Tripura. After two straight wins, they are comfortably positioned at the top spot (6 pts) followed by Delhi  (4 pts). 

Forward Jacob Jhon Kattookaren opened the account in 21st minute. Ajay Bisht of Uttarakhand equalized in the later stage of first half. Karnataka were quick enough to take lead in the added time of first half from a Shajan Franklin goal. 

When the game almost looked to settle in with the same score, Ankith P, who replaced Jacob in the later half scored the third goal.  

Karnataka play minnow Ladakh tomorrow, December 27, 11 am at the same venue. 

 

 

Santosh Trophy South Zone qualifiers set for a humdinger when Karnataka play Telangana tomorrow

Apparently, Saturday’s final day’s action in the Hero Santosh Trophy South Zone Group A qualifiers is all set to end on a thrilling note.

At 11.30 am, Tamil Nadu (3 points) clash with Andhra Pradesh (0 Pts) and if the former wins, then they will end up with 6 points. However, Andhra, who yielded a 90th minute goal to Karnataka on Thursday, would like to finish on a winning note, thus promising a keen contest.

The much-awaited final game is between hosts Karnataka (6 points) and Telangana (3 points). The hosts just need a draw to advance to the next round. But Telangana will be looking to scalp Karnataka and join the race.

Any three of the four teams are in with a chance to book the sole berth from this group and it all points to an exciting final day’s action though the team In the driver’s seat are hosts Karnataka.

 

Karnataka eke out a 1-0 win over Andhra Pradesh, move closer to qualifying

Hosts Karnataka were stretched to the limit before they eked out a 1-0 win over Andhra Pradesh in the Group A of Hero Santosh Trophy South Zone league. In another game Tamil Nadu came back from their 0-4 drubbing at the hands of the hosts to beat Telangana 1-0.

Karnataka who were rescued by an 90th minute strike by Kamalesh P kept an unbeaten record with six points from two games. Andhra adopted defensive tactics thus putting the brakes on the flow by the strong Karnataka side and almost pulled it off. However, with just a minute to go Kamalesh scored and ended the fight by the AP side, who now have lost both their matches and are out of contention.

In today’s second game, TN enjoyed the better of exchanges while Telangana were hardly the side that won their opener 4-0 against AP. 

After two efforts came to grief on the post in the first half, TN skipper Vijay Nagappan finally broke the deadlock two minutes after restart. Vijay’s free kick sailed over the wall and went in off the near post beating Telangana custodian Hussain hands down.

With one team qualifying for the final round, Karnataka remain the only unbeaten side and a draw will see them through. Karnataka meet Telangana in the final game on Saturday afternoon and a win for the latter will bring them back into contention.

If TN win against AP in Saturday’s first game and Karnataka lose in the afternoon, then it will be a three-way tie and goal difference and head to head results come into play.

Sudheer hat-trick floors Tamil Nadu

Hosts Karnataka stamped their authority by knocking down Tamil Nadu 4-0 in the inaugural game of the Santosh Trophy South Zone qualifiers played at the Bangalore Football Stadium earlier today. 

Karnataka went ahead early in the game, Kamalesh opened the goal account in the 11th minute of the game while Sudheer Kotikela, who has been in prime form for past few seasons in the local BDFA league scored a hattrick. 

Karnataka will take on Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, November 25. The later lost the second game of the day to an identical margin to Telengana.

Maatru Pratishtana thrash Indian Football Factory with help from Jyoti’s brace

Jyothi’s brace helped Maatru Pratishtana FC power past Indian Football Factory (IFF) 5-1 in the opening match of the KSFA’s Intimacy Women’s Super Division Football League at the Bangalore Football stadium on Monday morning, February 8, 2021.

After Mary Victoria, former Indian star from Karnataka and India’s first women’s coach inaugurated the 10-team women’s League along with former Indian international Mr. Aslam Khan, Dy. Gen. Secretary of KSFA, the much-anticipated opener got off to an exciting start.

Much was expected from IFF as they were the runners-up of the inaugural edition in 2019 but newcomers MPFC it was that went ahead midway through the first half.

Jyothi made the most of a confused defence and scored in the 24th minute. Five minutes before the break MPFC took a 2-0 lead when Alisha beat Kodi Alekhya under the IFF bar.

Jyothi doubled her tally 10 minutes into the second half before IFF pulled one back through an Aparna penalty.

Maatru, however, never allowed IFF into the game and late goals by Kaushalya (69th) and Soumya (87th) helped them sail through with a 5-1 verdict.

Sharda of Maatru Pratishtana FC was adjudged Player of the Match and was awarded an Intimacy Lingerie Gift Coupon by former Indian player Mary Victoria.

Winners of 2019 and runners-up last year BUFC open their campaign on Tuesday against newcomers Rebels while Slamzers from Belgaum, the only outstation club in the League clash in the second game.

73rd Santosh Trophy final round

Karnataka is in Group B along with Assam, Maharastra, Punkab, and Sikkim. Group A consist of Odisha, Goa, Delhi, Services, and Meghalaya.

73rd Santosh Trophy zonals from Feb 3 in Neyveli, Vignesh to lead state again

Karnataka team will be travelling to Neyveli, TN to play the South Zone qualifying round of Santosh Trophy, the national football championship for the 2018-19 season. This will be the 73rd edition of the senior national championship. The qualifying matches will be played between February 3 to 8.  

Impressed by their performance in the previous edition, selectors retained faith, and appointed Vignesh Gunashekar captain and Sunil Kumar vice-captain. Karnataka had a remarkable run last year, not before losing to host Bengal in semi final.  

Karnataka is placed in Group A along with Andhra Pradesh and host Tamil Nadu. Group B consists of Kerala, Telengana, Services, and Pondicherry.

Paromita on a roll, BUFC take on Mangalore in Impetus Trophy final today

Former India international, Paromita Sit marked her class by scoring another hattrick for BUFC in the semifinal match against Parikrma in the KSFA organized Impetus Trophy for women's football tournament. BUFC defeated Parikrma 4-0. The other goal was scored by Nadia.

Karnataka lose to Bengal in Hero Santosh Trophy semifinal

Defending champions Bengal moved past Karnataka 2-0  at the Sailen Manna Stadium in Howrah to set-up a title clash against Kerala in the Hero Santosh Trophy 2018.

Skipper Jiten Murmu and Tirthankar Sarkar scored in the 57th and 90+2nd minute respectively for the hosts.

Bengal started as the better side but not before long, Karnataka took control of the game. Bengal Head Coach Ranjan Chowdhury deployed Jiten Murmu and Bidyashagar Singh upfront but the duo didn’t have much of an impact in the first 45 minutes.

In the 17th minute, Sukesh Leon of Karnataka hit the woodwork with a header that took Bengal’s goalkeeper, Ranajit Majumder by surprise. The young shot-stopper then followed with two great saves to keep Bengal into the game.

Meanwhile, Bengal had a close chance of their own in the 36th minute through Sumit Das, who covered a lot of ground after getting the ball from midfield but the winger could not keep his effort on target from inside the box. Five minutes later, Bengal had another opportunity but Jiten’s header went wide.

Towards the end, Karnataka made two significant attempts through S. Rajesh and Sukesh, but both efforts produced nothing as the first half ended goalless.

Changing over, both teams seemed keen to make an early impression, but it was Bengal who secured the all-important opening goal in the 57th minute though Jiten. Sumit’s fierce effort was palmed away by Karnataka keeper Shaikhan CP but Jiten was at the right place at right time to slot home from the rebound.

Despite the goal, or perhaps because of it, the match continued to be played on a high tempo. Free-kicks from wide areas for Bengal continued to be an outlet towards the goal as the hosts dominated two thirds of possession in the second half.

Having missed a few half chances, Bengal went extremely close in the 74th minute when Tirthankar played a through ball to Bidyashagar but the teenage striker could not reach to the ball.

Meanwhile, Karnataka also pushed hard for a late equaliser, Shamanth Dodda joined Rajesh in the forward line but Karnataka could find no way through an imperious defence and it was Bengal who looked more likely to score.

Thereafter, Bengal continued to dominate proceedings but had to wait till additional time to get their second. Jiten with a brilliant run on the right got past his marker but was brought down on the edge of the box when he was about to pull the trigger, which earned Bengal a free-kick and Tirthankar made no mistake to put the ball into the back of the net to confirm Bengal's place in the final.

The 32-time winners, defending champions and hosts Bengal will now face 5-time champions Kerala in the ultimate battle on Sunday.

Punjab rally to beat Karnataka 2-1

Punjab rallied from a goal down to beat Karnataka 2-1 in a Group B fixture of the ongoing 72nd Santosh Trophy played at the Sailen Manna Stadium in Howrah on Monday (March 26).

Punjab began the game in an all-out attacking mode and created the first close chance as early as the 2nd minute. Amandeep Singh did well to cut in past a couple of defenders after getting the ball from midfield but his powerful drive missed the target by a whisker.

While Punjab pressed high up, Karnataka managed to take the lead against the run of the play in the 7th minute when Rajesh converted from the spot to score his third goal in as many games. The penalty was awarded to Punjab following Sunny's foul on Leon Augustine inside the penalty box.

Having conceded early on, Punjab started attacking with even more intensity and their efforts paid off in the 18th minute when Jitender slotted home from close after receiving a delightful ball from Gurtej Singh to get the equaliser.

Punjab then went on to take the lead in the 26th minute as Baltej scored. Parmjit Singh got the ball near the edge of the box and after getting past a couple of defenders he played the ball to an unmarked Baltej for an easy tap in.

Karanataka tried their best for an equaliser but apart from testing Moses with a header from Rajesh in the 39th minute, they were not able to create any opportunities as the first half ended 2-1.

Changing over, Karnataka looked better of the two sides but it was Punjab skipper Sarbjit Singh who remained their nemesis with his timely clearances.

Karnataka, towards the end, went all out to grab an equaliser. Although they created numerous scoring opportunities in the final quarter but it was lack of finishing that prevented them scoring as the game ended 2-1 in Punjab’s favour.

The result threw open Group B wide open as three teams will take the field on the final day of the league phase hoping to make the semifinals. Punjab and Karnataka are level on 6 points while Goa with their 6-1 win against Odisha in the other fixture of the day have 3.

Karnataka will be looking to beat Mizoram in their final league game on March 28 in order to qualify, while Punjab need to beat Goa on the same day and they will also be looking for a favour from Mizoram.

Karnataka rout Goa 4-1

Down by a goal Karnataka displayed solidarity among themselves to demolish Goa 4-1 in a one-sided Group B encounter of the 72nd Santosh Trophy at the Sailen Manna Sports Complex in Howrah on Thursday.

At half time Goa were leading 1-0. Kapil Hoble scored in the 26th minute for Goa while Gunashekhar Vignesh equalised for the Southern state in the 54th minute before S. Rajesh's 61st minute goal along with a 69th minute own goal by Mathew Gonsalves and 89th minute strike by Leon Augustine sealed the full three points for Karnataka.

Goa coach Armando Colaco made four changes to the side that went down 1-3 to Mizoram on Tuesday, by handing starts to goalkeeper Agnelo Gomes and midfielders Joachim Abranches, Subert Pereirra and Clive Miranda, while his Karnataka counterpart P.  Muralidharan opted for the 4-4-2 formation for their tournament opener with Rajesh and Liton Shil leading the line.

Karnataka began the game in attacking mode and created the first chance in the 6th minute. Rajesh did well to cut in past a couple of defenders from the left but his powerful drive sailed inches over the horizontal.

Around the 15th minute mark, Karnataka had another chance through striker Liton but a slight delay allowed enough time to Goa defender Jessel Carneiro to clear the ball.

While Karnataka pressed high up, Goa managed to take the lead against the run of the play. Kapil capitalised on a defensive error to beat Karnataka custodian Shaikhan from Joachim Abranches' low cross in the 26th minute.

The goal appeared to be the wakeup call for Karnataka, as they began attacking with intensity through Vignesh and Rajesh but some desperate defending by Goa saw the first half ended 1-0. 

The second half started with Karnataka having greater possession and looked more threatening going forward, thanks to crisp passing, good off-the-ball movement and dazzling individual skills. Karanataka found the equalizer through skipper Vignesh, who slotted from Sukesh Leon's pass in the 54th minute.

The goal inspired Karnataka to get even more offensive in their approach and they took the lead in the 61st minute when Rajesh found the back of the net from Liton's pass, which was complimented by some lazy defending by Goa.

Goa though created some chances but failed to equalize, as they failed to stick to their passing game policy. The players seemed to be more keen on playing direct football sending long balls from the centre-line.

Karnataka's third goal came in form of own goal in the 69th minute when experienced Mathew Gonsalves slotted in his own net while trying to clear Sukesh's cross. 

Thereafter, Goa went all out to grab some late goals but all their efforts were undone by an 89th minute strike from young Leon Augustine. The Bengaluru FC reserves winger got the ball from midfield and ran past a couple of defenders to slot a brilliant volley home.

Karnataka will face Odisha next on March 24 at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium while Goa will face the same opponents on March 26 at Mohun Began Ground. 

Santosh Trophy finals in Kolkata, Karnataka start their campaign on March 22 against Goa

Defending champions West Bengal will take on Manipur on the opening day as the 72nd edition of the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy kicks-off in Kolkata on March 19, 2018. 

Ten teams who qualified from the preliminary stages have been divided into two groups of five teams each with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals which are to be played on March 30, 2018. The final is slated for April 1, 2018.
