Bengaluru FC were made to split the points once again as Students Union FC came from behind in a 1-1 draw in the BDFA Super Division League, at the Bangalore Football Stadium, on Tuesday. Macarton Louis Nickson (15’) gave the Blue Colts an early lead, before Student Union found the equalizer late in the game through Aaryan Amla (80’).

The Blue Colts made two changes from their 1-1 draw against Bangalore Dream United, bringing on Bekey Oram and Macarton in place of Omega Vanlalhruaitluanga and Rahul Raju. Eager to get their first win of the season, the team went on the attack from the get go and took the lead fifteen minutes into the game. Lalthangliana found Bekey free in the box, whose dummy saw the ball roll to an unmarked Macarton, and the forward placed his shot low into the far corner to make it 1-0.

Jagdeep Singh, who opened his account for the season against Dream United, almost doubled Bengaluru’s lead in the 41st minute when Lalthangliana found him in space inside the box. However, the defender’s shot was creeping into the top corner until Students Union goalkeeper Abhishek Ramesh’s outstretched arm pushed it over the bar.

Five minutes into the second period, Bekey stole possession high up the pitch and played Macarton through, but the forward’s lob into the box was cleared by Sujith Kumar. Immediately after, Union were down to 10 men following Shelton Nickson’s red card for a high boot that caught Edwin Rossario.

The Blue Colts, with the advantage of an extra man, created several chances to double their lead. First, Jagdeep cut into the box from the right and saw his effort saved at the near post. Later, Shighil NS, on as a substitute, found Lalthangliana’s run through the Students Union defence, but the forward shot well wide of the mark. In the 79th minute, Bekey won possession in the midfield and found Lalthangliana unmarked in the box, but his shot was saved by Abhishek.

Students Union were back on level terms only a minute later, when Amla managed to brush past Robin Yadav’s challenge and place the ball into the far corner. From the final action of the game, Biswa Darjee’s header off Omega’s cross beat the ’keeper but bounced off the crossbar and out of play.

The Blue Colts are back in action in the League on November 17, when they take on Kodagu United FC at the same venue.

Akashdeep scores four as Bengaluru FC come from behind to register 5-2 win over Students Union

Bengaluru FC Media

Bengaluru FC made it four wins in four in the BDFA Super Division League with a 5-2 defeat of Students Union FC, at the Bengaluru Football Stadium, on Tuesday. Akashdeep Singh was the star of the day for Sandesh Bhoite’s side, with his four goals helping Bengaluru come from behind to take all three points and retain their place atop the League standings.

The game was off to a frantic start with both teams eager to impose themselves from the go. With just six minutes on the clock, it was Students Union who took the lead through Japanese striker Tazki Yoshida. Murli Srinivas won a duel with Harmanpreet Singh in the box and squared the ball to Yoshida, whose shot had enough power to sneak into the goal despite Dipesh Chauhan getting his gloves to it.

The Blue Colts responded less than four minutes later, when Akashdeep was brought down by a clumsy tackle in the area, prompting the referee to point to the spot. The winger then made no mistake, converting his penalty to bring the Colts back on level terms.

The turnaround was complete one minute before the break when Shivasakthi, who spent most of the half playing on the SUFC defenders’ shoulders, finally broke the offside trap to get to Thoi Singh’s ball. Seeing Abhishek Ramesh come off his line, the striker opened his body and put the ball into the far corner, giving his side the lead.

Bengaluru needed little time to find their rhythm in the second period and only four minutes after the restart, Shivasakthi turned provider. Receiving the ball at the edge of the box, the striker twisted and turned his markers before finding Akashdeep free, whose shot hit the back of the net before Abhishek could react. Akashdeep then completed his hat-trick only moments later when he got to the end of Shivasakthi’s cross and cushioned the ball past the Students Union custodian to make it 4-1.

Akashdeep then got his fourth of the afternoon with a similar finish from inside the box, after Thoi Singh got into the area and found him with a low pass. Into the closing stages, Sanjay S. pulled one back for Students Union but it was too little too late. Union were then reduced to ten men heading into injury time when substitute ‘keeper Jeevan Kumar was given his marching orders for a rash challenge on Shivasakthi outside the box.

The Blue Colts are back in action on February 4 when they take on ADE FC.

Bengaluru colts school Students Union in 9-0 thrashing

Bengaluru FC Media

Bengaluru FC bounced back to winning ways in the BDFA Super Division League with a 9-0 thrashing of Students Union in a Round-3 encounter at the Bangalore Football Stadium, on Friday. Leon Augustine’s hat-trick (18’, 46’, 87’) and Naorem Roshan Singh’s brace (10’, 20’) powered the big win as Asheer Akhtar (22’), Calvin Baretto (71’), Myron Mendes (72’) and Edmund Lalrindika (80’) too got on to the scoresheet.

Going into the game, Coach Naushad Moosa made three changes to the line-up, handing starts to defender Biswa Darjee, midfielder Ajay Chhetri and BFC U15s 'keeper Herojit Singh who made his debut.

After some early chances which were thwarted by Students Union goalkeeper Calvin Abhishek, the Blue Colts broke the deadlock in the 10th minute after attacker Roshan Singh controlled and smashed home Biswa Darjee's outside-of-the-boot cross in from the left.

Moosa's boys kept the tempo high and netted three more times in a span of five minutes. Leon doubled the lead when he headed in Ajay Chhetri's deft chip in from the left in the 18th minute before Roshan completed his brace two minutes later. SUFC failed to clear Ajay's cross in from the left and Roshan reacted quickest to finish to make it 3-0.

The score was 4-0 just two minutes later when defender Asheer Akhtar fired home a low drive from the edge of the box on the right as the Blue Colts ran riot.

The second half began explosively as Bengaluru struck inside 30 seconds. Striker Parag Shrivas capitalised on a weak back pass to gain possession and slid it across the goal from the right to find Leon at the far post for his second of the game.

The Blue Colts continued to push ahead then struck twice in two minutes. Substitute Calvin Baretto scored the sixth of the game, tapping home Biswa’s pass from the right after Altamash did well to find the wing-back clear in the box. A minute later, Edmund Lalrindika, on for Ajay Chhetri, set up Myron Mendes with his first pass of the game, as the skipper slid it past Abhishek to make it 7-0.

Bengaluru then struck twice more in the final ten minutes. Edmund controlled Biswa's cross in from the right and scored on his second attempt after the first one was blocked, and then claimed his second assist when he set up Leon to complete the latter’s hat-trick with three minutes left to play.

The Blue Colts next take on Kickstart FC on 24th November.

Bengaluru go down 2-1 to Students Union

Bengaluru FC Media

A host of controversial decisions marred Bengaluru FC’s 2-1 loss to Students Union FC in a round four match in the BDFA Super Division League, at the Bengaluru Football Stadium.

After over an hour of football that saw long spells of possession and battles in midfield, a strike from over 25 yards out by BFC skipper Myron Mendes saw stand-in coach Sandesh Boithe’s boys take the lead in the 68th minute.

However, Student’s Union equalized late on in the game through a header from Amoes, though replays showed that the ball had been cleared off the line by defender Prashanth Kalinga.

A defensive lapse late in the game allowed South United score the winner deep into extra time as Amoes latched onto a pass from midfield and placed it past a hapless Shainkhan CP in the BFC goal.

The Blues’ reserve side dropped down to fourth position on the table, as the win took South United to nine points from three games.

Bengaluru FC defeat Students Union 2-0

Bengaluru FC Media

A first half brace from striker Pawan Srinivas was enough as a very young Bengaluru FC side secured a 2-0 victory over Students Union FC in the BDFA Super Division at the Bangalore Football Stadium, in Bengaluru, on Monday. Not a single first team player was part of the Blues’ side, who are undefeated in the Division, as U19s coach Louis Nickson took charge at the touchline with a side comprising just academy players, overseen by Head of Youth Development Matthew Holland.

The Blues started from the word go with Rishabh Agarwal and Pradeep Ramesh pulling the strings in midfield as full-backs Niraad Bose and Prashanth Kalinga provided width down the flanks. It didn’t take long for Bengaluru to score with Pawan tapping home from inside the box after Kalinga’s inch-perfect cross from the right flank in the very first minute.

Students Union attempted to restore parity but it wasn’t to be as the Blues piled the pressure, eager to double their lead. The second goal came in the 23rd minute when Rushi Anto was brought down for a free-kick at the edge of the Students Union box after some neat interplay by the Blues in midfield. Rishabh’s perfectly executed set piece was nodded home by Pawan as he grabbed his second goal of the game.

Into the second half and holding a 2-0 advantage, the Blues kept the pressure on the Union defence with Rushi and Pradeep combining well in midfield. Students Union had a rare chance when striker Stephen found himself at the end of a cross from Madan but his header was inches wide of Srijit in the BFC goal.

The Blues best chance of the second half came when a cross from Shelton Paul late in the second half found Blues’ substitute striker Gopan, who peeled free of the Union defence, but his shot was miscued as the referee blew the whistle on an impressive performance from the young Blues.

“The boys performed really well today to get the three points as Students Union are a very good side. We’re looking to keep this performance in mind as we go forward in the Division and the aim is to keep another clean sheet and put on another positive performance when we take on Ozone FC next week,” said U19s coach Louis Nickson following the game.

The Blues’ next BDFA Super Division tie will see them face Ozone FC on the 12th of January.

A Bangalore-based footballer and writer

 by Saurabh Rai

Pranay Thapa, a footballer playing in the Bangalore Super Division League (BDFA) for Students Union Football Club who hails from Gyalshing (West Sikkim) has done something with which we don’t relate footballers that often barring the Autobiographies which they write mostly after retirement. Pranay has just completed writing his first book titled They get what they want.

Pranay’s book is a fiction which revolves around three main protagonists and is based in Brazil and it also gives a message which is so connected with the present scenario of women empowerment prevailing in the country. Pranay said, “My first love has always been football and being in the field playing the game has always given me tremendous happiness but reading books and writing has been my other passion in life and I had this long cherished dream of writing a book which has finally come true” and he further added that there are a few references to football in the story.

This book published by Bangalore-based Triangle printing house will be formally launched next week and soon will be available in the market. Pranay is also planning a separate launch in Kolkata in February where Sanju Pradhan, East Bengal captain will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest along with many other footballers.

Along with writing a book and playing football, Pranay is also busy pursuing MBA (Marketing) from a reputed Institute in Bangalore and it does not end there as he has recently launched charity, “Sasonian Foundation” with which Pranay helps the poor and needy people by distributing food, clothes and even monetary assistance. Pranay said, “This charity is quite new but I am trying my best to promote it even further and plan to invest a portion of the profit which I will get from the book sales towards it, I also expect many like-minded individuals to join me in this noble cause.”

People like Pranay sends out a positive message to the Youths that it’s not impossible to pursue you passion and also remain focused in your studies. Well we talk about smart footballers in this age and may be Pranay Thapa fits in that category perfectly!

Selection trials for Students Union Football Club

Sure this will be a great news to the budding players looking out for a top football club in the Garden City. We get to see several posts by the aspiring footballers on our Football in Bangalore wall and various ones messaging the same -  asking for clubs and trials.

So here is this for you...

Open selection trials for the Students Union football team will be held at the Bangalore Football Stadium from today, September 21 thru Sunday, September 23, 3pm – 5pm.

Students Union is a BDFA Super Division team, they were promoted to Super Division last season. Also, they are the only privately managed club playing in Super Division.

Last season they started their campaign stupendously by defeating HAL. However, they lost focus midway owing to player’s injury a decent bench-strength, and somehow avoided relegation.
